Get to know the journey behind North Sumatra's most enriching wellness retreat.

How it all began

Simalem was born from a family's dream to live in harmony with nature, not merely as a retreat. When the late Tamin Sukardi first acquired this land, his vision was simple—he sought to retire as a farmer amidst the stunning landscapes of Sumatra. Over time, this private haven blossomed into a welcoming space for visitors from around the globe, drawn by its tranquility, pristine beauty, and the rich wisdom of the local culture.

The journey

2002 - 2017

Planting of seeds

As international guests mingled with local communities, many sensed an extraordinary energy emanating from the waterfalls, forests, and the serene presence of the land. Originally, Simalem began as a farm, where the family transitioned from chemical to organic farming practices, fostering a harmonious balance with nature. This commitment to sustainability laid the foundation for what would become a sanctuary for all. The family first developed a section of the land of Pangambatan Valley into a lodge, inviting visitors to enjoy a restful stay amid the lush surroundings. Inspired by the shared recognition of this unique environment, the space gradually transformed into a sanctuary where movement and stillness harmoniously coexist, guided by nature and the ancestral wisdom of those who have long called this land home.

2018 - 2024

Transforming and expanding

To bring this vision to life, the concept of Simalem Sanctuary as a haven for mindful living comes to life. With the invaluable input of wellness volunteers, the concept was refined, leading to the creation of inviting spaces such as Pangambatan Café, which offers a carefully curated menu focused on healthier, locally inspired cuisine.  The sanctuary features an array of wellness facilities, yoga and meditation spaces, outdoor adventure activities, sustainable farming estate and co-working areas, all seamlessly integrated with a variety of accommodations—from cozy rooms to private villas. This is a place where guests can slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with themselves, fully immersed in the wisdom of nature.

2025 –

An ever-evolving sanctuary

However, Simalem Sanctuary is more than just a destination; it is a living, evolving sanctuary shaped by everyone who visits. Guests are not merely observers but active participants in this journey, contributing to the ongoing transformation of the space. Through shared experiences, deep reflection, and engagement with the land and its people, each visitor leaves a mark, just as the sanctuary imprints itself upon them. Simalem is not a resort that imposes transformation; rather, it is a gentle space that awakens the essence that has always resided within.
